The AsMA Mentorship Program is offered to pair younger members who are early in their careers with senior members who share a common interest or who can aide the mentee in their interaction in the AsMA. The program is designed to establish relationships between senior members and those earlier in their careers, help new members establish goals and goal achievement, enhance career development, and promote earlier advancement in the organization.
This web-based database is easy to use. You just need to sign up as either a mentor or mentee. Mentees will then look for a match.
The mentor program is a benefit of AsMA membership.
Objectives:
- Assist in the early career development of members of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) through affiliation with senior members who share common educational, research, or operational interest.
- Encourage growth of the Aerospace Medical Association by attracting new members through improved career development and assistance.
- Encourage the development of leadership potential of young members through direct personal contact with senior members of the association.
- Facilitate employment, research, and educational opportunities for young members through the creation of a web-based market place.
Definitions:
Mentor: Any AsMA member who has experience in a designated subject area and volunteers to serve. A mentor may be currently employed or retired. Generally, they would not be in the hierarchical or supervisory chain of command with the mentee. Function of the mentor can include guidance, role-modeling, interpersonal support, provision of feedback regarding academic paths, research, or career decision-making.
Mentee: Any AsMA member who is a student, resident, trainee, or member for less than 5 years.
Term of Mentorship: Mentor/mentee relationships are renewable each year.
Process:
1. MENTORs:
- The Mentor Program is a members-only web-based program that creates a database of mentor volunteers that lists attributes that may be of interest to the mentee.
- When contacted by a mentee, mentors may review the mentee information from the website to confirm that they would be a good match.
- Once a mentor accepts a mentee, he/she has the responsibility to periodically continue contact with the mentee during the mentorship period. Mentors should arrange to have some contact with a mentee that travels to the annual meeting.
- Mentors may accept a new mentee or decline based on their review of the mentee information, current workload and other mentee relationships.
- Sign up to be a Mentor here.(Members, you will be required to login.)
2. MENTEEs
- Mentees log onto the website and complete the mentee form containing their current information.
- Mentees search the Mentor database and freely select a mentor based on the attributes that matter to the mentee.
- Mentees email the mentor of their choice, clearly identifying themselves as participants in the AsMA Mentorship Program.
- Mentors may accept a new mentee or decline based on their review of the mentee information, current workload and other mentee relationships.
- When a mentor/mentee relationship is formed, the relationship extends to one year. At that time, the mentee can request to continue the relationship or seek a different mentor.
