A Note from Zulene

As I return home from my husband's hospital room, I see that the trees actually look like the “Flocked” white Christmas trees I used to see in Las Vegas. When I was young, I wondered why anyone would make trees that look so fake. As beautiful as my surroundings are, and with 5 (five) degrees showing on the thermometer, I think about all of the beautiful writings Dale has sent about Arizona. It is easy to get excited about the upcoming Aerospace meeting in Phoenix. I hope you will all take time to fill out your registration forms. Remember to send a check for payment whenever you can. We understand the need to use charge cards when dealing with foreign currency.

Until then, I will continue to spotlight some of your board members. I asked the board members to send me some information they would like to share with the general membership. Frankie Berry, your secretary, submitted the following article.

Meet Frankie Berry

Although I am a fifth generation Mississippian, I left home in 1971 to become a Texan. As a registered nurse, I later joined the Air Force in 1974 and eventually was assigned to RAF Lakenheath, England, where I met Michael Berry, a handsome flight surgeon. I attended my first AsMA meeting with Michael in 1977 (as a newlywed) in Las Vegas and was introduced to the Wing by my beloved mother-in- law, Del Berry. I have been enjoying the company of the ladies of the Wing for 32 years, except for several years when our three children, Jennifer, Michael and Matthew, were younger and in school. During that time, I stayed busy volunteering in their schools and at our church, and finally with the Air Force Academy Parents’ Association when the boys attended the Academy. They are now both active duty Air Force officers. Between 1994 and 2006, I worked in the family business of Aerospace Medicine as the office nurse and eventually office manager, alongside my husband, Michael and my father-in-law, Dr. Charles and my mother-in-law, Del.

In 2007, Michael took a senior executive position with the FAA in Washington, DC, and we started a new adventure, working in Washington and living in Northern Virginia. That same year we became grandparents for the first time to our daughter, Jenni’s twins, Grace Addella and Nicholas Charles (Charlie). The last two years have been spent traveling back to Houston as frequently as possible to enjoy these two little bright spirits. I think, by far, that grand-parenting is the best occupation I have ever had.

I enjoy traveling with Michael as often as possible, especially to the overseas meeting of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine, keeping up with family and friends, discovering the history and local attractions of Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, and reading suspense and detective novels as well as historical fiction and non-fiction. Now I am starting a new chapter as I go back to full time work at the FAA in Washington, DC.

Join the Wing

The Wing of the Aerospace Medical Association was formed in 1952 “to support the specialty of aviation, aerospace, and environmental medicine by facilitating cooperation among its practitioners and by increasing public understanding and appreciation of its importance.” A second purpose of the Wing is “to promote sociability among its members and their families.” Each year at the scientific meeting, AsMA spouses meet new friends from every corner of the world, sharing in the many cultural experiences and educational opportunities of the host city. Dues are $40 per year. For more information, contact:
