Baxter Responds to Patient Needs After Floods in Thailand

Baxter International Inc. employees in the Asia Pacific region recently responded quickly to the urgent need for peritoneal dialysis therapy and intravenous solutions in the aftermath of recent severe floods in Thailand. When Thailand was hit by extreme rainfall and flooding in October and November 2011, Baxter took quick and decisive action to ensure that the affected area’s peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients still received delivery of PD therapy. To ensure that the country’s PD patients had access to the supplies needed for therapy regardless of where they were relocated, employees worked closely with distributors, PD centers, hospitals, and the government. Baxter also coordinated an emergency shipment of intravenous (IV) solutions to the country, provided survival kits to local residents, and offered assistance to Baxter employees impacted by the disaster.

In addition, after local IV manufacturing plants closed due to the high floodwaters, the Thai government reached out to Baxter Thailand for emergency assistance. Baxter’s teams worked quickly to ship supplies of IV solutions to locations in need. In all, Baxter shipped 1.2 million containers of IV solutions, including 10,000 containers flown urgently through a partnership with Thai Airways. Baxter also established a Flood Employee Assistance Program to provide aid to Baxter employees in Thailand who had been affected. Despite experiencing flooding in their own homes, employees made time to give to others less fortunate, including conducting a fundraiser to help buy food for PD patients staying in a temporary shelter, and by creating and distributing survival packs to the areas residents, even wading through the water to make the deliveries.

Wyle Provided Holiday Stockings to ISS

Presents and holiday stockings, supplied by Wyle’s expert “space-rated” seamstresses, were delivered and hung aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to give astronauts that special feeling of home. The stockings and presents were delivered in November when the Progress 45P re-supply vehicle docked with the ISS. Each year, new stockings are made and customized for each astronaut and cosmonaut, and then flown to the International Space Station on a mission just before the holiday season. The stockings are personalized with their names, including Cyrillic font, and holiday scenes. Also, a holiday tree, fabricated by a team in Houston using various colors of flight-certified Nomex material, was launched to the International Space Station aboard the STS-112 shuttle mission in October 2002. Nomex is a non-flammable material used by Wyle for a wide range of storage needs about the Space Station and Space Shuttle.

This service was part of Wyle’s 10-year Bioastronautics contract where the company provides a wide range of medical and health related services to NASA. Wyle’s Behavioral, Health and Performance section’s mission is to identify psychiatric, psychological, psychosocial, and psychophysiological factors that could impact extended-duration space missions and to develop countermeasures to facilitate adaptation to the space environment. Among many other areas, the Wyle section is responsible for supporting astronauts and their family members during all mission phases. Wyle personnel assist the astronauts in monitoring and maintaining their behavioral health, well-being, and performance during ISS and Shuttle missions.
