Publication AbstractsManuscripts Online and a Look AheadSarah A. Nunneley, M.D., M.S., Editor-in-ChiefAviat Space Environ Med 2003; 74:1 It is my pleasure to wish you a happy and prosperous New Year and to report on events at the journal. The past year has been very busy as we implemented a number of changes in the Editorial Office while working to provide the best possible selection of papers for our readers. Last May, Sarah and I staffed a table at the Annual Meeting and were able to speak with many of you regarding the journal, its problems, and our plans for the future. The journal staff also presented well-received educational sessions on writing, submitting, and reviewing papers for the journal. Please look for us again at the meeting this year in our home city, San Antonio. I wish to express my personal gratitude to the Referees who did the work of peer review for the papers submitted to the journal during the past year. Their names are listed with the annual index in the December issue. Look there for the names of your friends and colleagues as well as luminaries in our field who gave their time and effort to improve the quality of our publication. Thanks also to many others who recommended names when we needed help in finding referees for specific papers. My thanks also to the Associate Editors, who are listed every month at the front of the journal. They represent the various interests and constituencies of our readership and are ready to hear your concerns or discuss ideas for improvement of the journal. They have been a great help to me during the past year; I offer my heartfelt thanks to those who completed their terms in December 2002: Michael R. Barratt, Donato J. Borrillo, Malcolm G. Braithwaite, John A. Caldwell, Len S. Goodman, and Patricia C. Ravella. And I welcome incoming Board members Susan P. Baker, Bob S. K. Cheung, David P. Gradwell, Henry L. Taylor, Richard D. Vann, and Dougal B. Watson. The big news this year has been the implementation of a web-based system for electronic submission and review of manuscripts. A brief description of the new procedures appears on the inside back cover of the journal, but readers should look at the complete details on our web site, http://www.editorialmanager.com/asem. We are very pleased with the way the new system operates. It is especially advantageous to our overseas authors and reviewers because it effectively erases location and postal delays as factors in the review process. A recent upgrade to the program makes it fully compatible with Netscape. The only other major problem we have encountered relates to users not using the most current version of Acrobat Reader. Please read with care the information provided about system requirements. We hope you will agree that the journal is in good health. With the new review system and its promise of faster publication, we are ready for authors to submit their best research articles and clinical material. The coming year will also bring you at least two excellent Supplements to the journal on topics of great current interest. In closing, please know that the journal staff and I welcome your comments, suggestions, and constructive criticism. The best way to reach us quickly is by writing to ASEMJournal@att.net.
